Extra Activities

The school is proud of the range and variety of the Extra Activities on offer to students.

The curriculum is enriched by many visits, visitors and trips - to mention just a few, in Year 5 last year there was a day trip to Derby Museum and to Little Moreton Hall; Year 6 went to see a Christmas Pantomime and had a visit last year from a felt artist who made hangings with the entire year group. Year 7 visited Standon Bowers, and Year 7 and Year 8 both had the opportunity to enter the “Young Chef of the Year” challenge. Year 8 were inspired to write poetry by Richard Grant, the Birmingham Poet Laureate and his team of Slam Poets. The previous year, one of our Year 8 students went on to win the national Youth Slam Poetry competition. There are further details of these and other activities on www.oldfields.org.uk - see "Departments", "Course Summaries" and "Extra Activities" for each year group - and not everything is mentioned even there.

Mr and Mrs Laws run an after-school Drama Club for all year groups to prepare children to take Trinity Guildhall Drama examinations. Last year every child who entered obtained a merit or a distinction. Mr and Mrs Laws have extended these classes by popular demand to include two groups of our ex-students, who now attend Thomas Alleyne’s High School: they return here after school to attend these classes.

Oldfields Hall is well known in the local area for the variety and high quality of its Music activities. Although our Head of Music, Mr Blant, retired in July 2009, after a superb year of musical activity including hosting several pyramid concerts and the visit of Tasmin Little and members of the Manchester Camerata to the school, as well as a programme of evening concerts, the school is very committed to continuing our tradition of musical excellence into the future.

PE and Games has a very high profile at Oldfields Hall. Mr Taylor and other staff run games clubs almost every day at lunchtime and after school. There is a huge enthusiasm for sport and there are many school sporting teams which regularly play matches against other local schools. Inter-House shields are keenly competed for in almost all school sports. Several students from our Year 7 and 8 were selected from District Trials to represent Stafford and District in the County Athletics Championships in the Summer Term. Sports Day was a mixture of whole school participation and a celebration of athletics events.

There are many other clubs, visits which extend the curriculum and activities, from Computer Club to Chess Club to a Model Aeroplane Club run by Mr Brundrett. For further details of Extra Activities, see the "Departments - Course Summaries" pages on the school website.
